Some signs were pointing to the rumors that Amir Khan would be Mayweather’s next opponent that surfaced earlier this week. A report from the Daily Mail by Jeff Powell in Britain suggested that Khan and Mayweather would meet in the ring on May 3, 2014 in Las Vegas and expected to rake in $6 million.
The report picked up steam due to the fact that Amir Khan’s December 7 showdown with Devon Alexander has hit a few speed bumps and the deal for the fight hadn’t been finalized. Rather than risk a huge bout with Mayweather, the story suggests that Khan will focus on training for the next seven months with Virgil Hunter in San Francisco to prepare for the biggest fight of his career.
The notion that Mayweather would face Khan isn’t too farfetched as the list of noteworthy opponents who are a solid draw is dwindling. Despite Khan being knocked out by Danny Garcia and lost to Lamont Peterson in recent bouts, the fact remains that Khan is a large draw overseas and could help carry his side of the pay per view. It is imperative due to Showtime not wanting to deal with another Robert Guerrero debacle and needing their return on Mayweather’s massive contract to be adequate.
Nevertheless, Khan would be viewed as a massive underdog who skipped the line to face Mayweather. Social media lit up with comments from many shuttering the idea of the fight. But just as soon as the rumors began to gain speed, Khan’s team issued a statement.
Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up against Devon Alexander on December 7th, taking up a fight against Floyd Mayweather in May of next year instead. Contrary to this story, Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached.
Well, there’s that. It’s not likely that Mayweather would even be thinking about an opponent at this juncture considering that he’s coming off of a brilliant performance against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and is likely enjoying a vacation before he sits down at the negotiating table again.
